For as long as I can remember I have been drawn to and fascinated by wood. Whether in tree form, or in any of its multitude of uses, from architecture and construction, furniture, carvings, and art, no other medium offers more diversity in appearance, color, texture, and feel. Though imperfect and challenging to shape and sculpt, the unique characteristics, grain patterns, and natural defects in wood, not just between species but also in each piece of wood invariably result in the wood itself demanding more attention than the subject portrayed. My sculptures are inspired by a fascination with both wildlife and human form. While predominantly realistic, many times the the wood is better displayed with a smoother , more stylistic rendering. In some cases the wood is selected due to the subject, while in others the subject is chosen to show off a particular piece of wood. All of my sculptures are carved from a single piece of wood and then finished with clear polyurethane which helps to enhance the grain and protect the wood while retaining its natural appearance. I enjoy the feeling of taking a rough piece of a tree and transforming it into something beautiful. Thank you for visiting my website and I hope you enjoy my work.
